Tell us about yourself
I am a 40-year-old mother of four children. I have a fish selling business in Lucky Summer area of Baba Dogo, in Nairobi. I open my business late in the evening at around 5:00pm and close at around 9:00pm. During the day, I work on getting the fish from my supplier, cleaning them so that they are ready to sell. I put a lot of effort in my business since it is my sole source of income that supports the needs of my family.
What are you most proud of?
I am proud of the fact that my business has grown from what it used to be three years back. Initially, I was unable to meet my customers demand due to low stock. I had low stock because I didn’t have enough money to increase my stock. Initially, I could only get about 50 fish in a day to sell. Currently, I am able to get stock of 200 fish in a day and sell them out completely to my customers. This is thanks to the loan I received from Pangea Network through my group that helped me boost my stock.
What is the most important lesson you’ve learned with The Pangea Network?
The most important lesson I have learnt from Pangea is about customer service and competition. I deal in perishable goods and hence I have to ensure that my stock gets finished every day. To do this, I have to have good customer relations so that they keep coming back for more. Regarding competition, I learnt to offer what my competitors don’t offer. The fish I sell are small sized, hence even a customer that has little money can afford fish for their family to ensure they have a balanced diet. In this way, I not only have many customers and offer an affordable price, but my daily stock gets finished, ensuring I make maximum profits from my business.
