Since 1989, July 11 has been observed as World Population Day, a day to bring attention to the urgency of population issues. This year’s theme, Investing in Teenage Girls, focuses on empowering young girls to know their rights and giving them the necessary tools to succeed.

Around the world, teenage girls are often prematurely deemed ready for marriage and motherhood.

Many are removed from school and lack access to basic information on health and reproductive rights, making them vulnerable to illness or injury. “Girls with higher levels of schooling are less likely to marry as children. Educating adolescent girls has been a critical factor in increasing the age of marriage in a number of developing countries.” – ICRW

Numerous organizations work to bring education to these girls’ front doors; our Student Sponsorship Program strives to offer a safe, unabridged education to Kenya’s younger generations. Likewise, our Young Women’s Leadership Challenge, in both Kenya and the United States, offers real-world, personal and business development training to teenage girls, regardless of their economic background. “Teenage girls around the world face enormous challenges…Yet when

[they] are empowered, when they know about their rights and are given tools for success, they become agents of positive change in their communities.” – UNFPA
